A new group at Kantara has been launched with the aim to write a report on the real/imaginary threats of "deepfakes and AI" to ID Verification services (for example, services that verify biographic data, match photographs to selfies, cross-check account numbers and names, and so on). The report audience will be primarily buyers of ID proofing/verification services and regulators - to inform them of real threats, debunk some myths, outline potential countermeasures, and what to look for in vendor approaches/services.

The report will be informative and "from industry experts" - not a sales pitch. The idea is that Kantara members will widely circulate the report, and some of us will speak at conferences about the report material. The draft charter is attached.

We are seeking contributors with expertise in techniques used to subvert ID Verification systems, biometric presentation attack detection, biometric ‘liveness’ determination. We need a balance of vendors, technologists, policy-makers and buyers of ID verification services to add their experience and knowledge.

Participation in a Kantara group does not require paid-up membership.

We find that once companies realize the value for money, it is easy to justify corporate membership.

Discussion Group participants must complete a Group Participation Agreement

Our Discussion Group wiki is at https://kantara.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DGDF/overview

We meet weekly, and intend to publish our first report in Spring 2024.

The purpose of the new discussion group, from the charter:

Realistic simulations of human voice, video and text created by “Generative AI” systems have proliferated over the last year. The simulations pose enhanced risk that Identity Proofing andVerification (IDPV) systems will be unable to distinguish real from fake signals. Organizations that rely on IDPV services to prevent fraud or impersonation are experiencing higher number and frequency of fraudulent attempts.
