Revised Group Context Paragraphs
The group rationale from the DG Charter serves the purpose of informing about the group and motivating people/companies to join. The charter text doesn’t meet the group’s needs as an overview and motivator for people to want to consume the group outputs. This page is a work in progress to develop a more effective rationale statement for those future readers.
Organizations and their computer system rely on accurate and effective remote identity verification to protect privileges and access to resources.
Fraudsters and hackers attempt to steal credentials that are linked to privileges, and the authenticators protecting the credentials, in order to gain access to and management of resources.
Remote identity verification today mainly relies on a combination of human interactions, software, and user-owned hardware. Today’s remote identity verification methods are susceptible to being overwhelmed by automated high-volume attacks, to being tricked by seemingly authentic video and voice simulations, or by high quality fake documents.
AI is fuelling and accelerating automation of attacks and attempts to obtain credentials and authenticators. Attack automation increases speed and scale, lowers costs, and lowers barriers to entry for attackers.
To fix existing vulnerabilities of remote identity verification, solutions must be able to distinguish a live human from a non-human or fake at a speed and scale equal to automated attacks. For returning users, solutions must also operate at speed and scale to determine whether the live human performing remote identity verification is the same live human that the system initially enrolled and granted privileges.
