Label Redesign
Joe started work on a redesign effort, built on the insight that there are four parts to the label:
- the Recipient
- the Data
- the Data use & Management
- the Authorities
There's a new Google Doc for us to use as a sandbox for reimagining the label. Email joe@switchbook.com for an invite.
Â
We reviewed the screenshots of the work that Lionel has been working on with RealMe at http://share.axure.com/NWNGLW/
Notably, it's more conversational on the left and they dropped revocation (it's not particularly appicable in their use case).
The item for "finding out more" combined a few items as well. Â Interestingly, they also have two labels on the same page because the data in the ceremony comes from two different places.
Â
Venkat brought up the possibility of including the location for the data source. This wasn't relevant in the legacy work that the ISWG started from (because they weren't participants in the Sharing Agreement). However, it might be worth considering adding. Especially if we can do it without adding anything to the default view.
Â
Venkat also shared the data model they are using for consent tokens in RealMe.Â

We also discussed Nat Sakimura's blog about Pavlov's Internet dog... the dangers of training people to click "ok" every time. He suggested not only that we find a way for default terms to be accepted without the user asking, but also for icons to simplify the label. Â
Lionel and Colin agreed that the challenge with icons is that all by themselves they are rarely self-explanatory. But icons + text can be powerful. Joe mentioned that for Nutrition Labels, people hunt for specific things. Some hunt for fat grams, others calories or carbs, still others for particular ingredients. If an icon+text can capture common use cases, users hunting for particular terms will quickly learn the icon that they care about and be able to rely on the icon when reviewing the label.
With the new breakdown of the label into four components, it's clear that some of the terms may be amenable to icons, while others, like the Data Recipient, are not.
