5. Car Rental Engagement Model

Rob: Maybe VRM doesn't work so well with commodity products when there are only so many differentiators. Car rental companies tend to be canonical. For reasons of efficiency and scale, companies have adopted a common, and limited set of parameters for offering products.

What do we do with details?  Neither people nor vendors actually want to deal with a super long list of details.

Synthetic categories: new idea at the Open Travel Alliance (OTA). Instead of the laundry list of specifics, it's a lifestyle category. Instead of chevy malibu, it's a performance car. Putting it in the customer's language. What matters to the customer, in the language they use. Rob will weave that into the Car Rental Engagement Model.

Talked a bit about Iain's work with his 4500 attribute schema for tracking an individual's data across multiple suppliers and across their lifetime. 600 are needed on the vendor side for them to run their business. Iain estimates that of that 600, about 400 would be more efficient and higher quality if run by the individual.

With the PDS, permissioned vendors should be able to infer your preferences at the point you ask "what about a car"?  Then we have to figure out the interface for smoothly correcting any false assumptions or inferences. Buddy might have two kids, but for this trip, they might not be along for the ride. So we need an easy, simple way for people to iteratively improve vendor geusses with minimal effort.

How would we do that in the context of Google? Google is very use-driven. You tell it what you want, it tries to get it.  But the opportunity is for an open, generic way for the system to ask clarifying questions back to the user.  "I want a car"  Might generate the response: "Will you be bringing your children".  In other words, not just keywords, but a conversation.

6. C/S Engagement Model

Joe will draft from outline created at IIW. Friday meeting, Iain & Joe.

7. Kickstarter Project

Joe will finish draft. Must get headshot videos this week from all three stars.
